Cuando la científica polaca Maria Sklodowska (1867-1934) se casó con Pierre Curie, ambos trabajaron juntos en experimentos que les permitieron aislar dos nuevos elementos químicos: el polonio y el radio. Los dos fueron galardonados con el Premio Nobel de Física en 1903. Después de la muerte de Pierre, Marie Curie prosiguió sola sus investigaciones y, además, fue la primera mujer que ocupó una cátedra en la Universidad de París. En 1911 recibió el Premio Nobel de Química.
